Recently, I was involved in a team-building fun day with my colleagues from work. It was a lot of fun and the “getting to know each other” part of it was great. Then, we were divided into groups and had to come up with names for our sub-teams. Ours was “Team Authentic”.
The sub-teams were given materials; cardboards, stones, match sticks, glue, markers etc; to develop a logo, brand or picture that defines their groups. For “Team Authentic”, after much deliberations, a lady came up with a concept that blew my mind. “Can we all put our palms together on the cardboard and draw the outlines of our fingers. This will depict diversity, togetherness and authenticity; we may not use the whole materials but the product will be unique” she said.
The team agreed and the product was developed. We all signed off on our palms representation and wrote our first names on it. The image of the final product has not left my head even after many days; it probably never will. The image in my head has got me thinking and ruminating about the actual definition of “Authenticity”.
When I was in Primary School in the 1980s, I remember that the world’s population used to be about 3.5 billion people. Now (2018), there are about 7.6 billion humans in the world and there is a forecast that in my lifetime, the world’s population might get to about 12.5 billion. The mystery in all of this is that the creator has ensured that each of those 7.6 billion people have a unique identifier; their palms and finger prints. Honestly, I can’t fathom how this is possible but science has proven it right over and over again.
Imagine this for a moment: You (yes, I am talking about You) are so unique that you are different from 7.6 billion people. You are quintessentially unique that you have an identifier that differentiates you from every other human. So, what is the basis for the nonsensical comparisons that most humans do. Why compare yourself with others when you are uniquely Authentic. It’s a thing of the mind.
Don’t get it twisted; human comparison does not only occur among the Poor or the less privileged. Even the Rich and Affluent get involved too. For most humans, the other fellow’s life always looks better; even when we are not privy to their struggles and insecurities. We compare everything; careers, status, wealth, fame, health, even religious affiliations but we miss the real issue which is our uniqueness.
The creator has given each of us an identifier; the creator knows exactly where you are and who you are. Hey, stay in your lane; it’s unique. Nobody must be destroyed for you to move up; do your best in everything, celebrate your uniqueness and Que Sera Sera (whatever will be, will be).
The other thing that blew my imagination about the significance of our palms is that I have never read that science found out that recent humans have the same finger prints with people who have died hundreds or thousands of years ago. Imagine if you go to the embassy and your biometrics are taken and when it is checked in the system, you were told that you shared the same biometrics with some guy or lady who lived in the 1800s (lol). It has never happened.
This means that since the finger scanners were developed over 120 years ago, about 20 billion people have lived in the world and yet science has not discovered any two individuals who shared or still share the same finger prints; very interesting. I once read a quote: “I am not inferior to you, neither am I superior to you. We not equal too. I am me and you are you”. That is the definition of authenticity.
I hope that someday I will be able to get members of Team Authentic together, get an artist to do an impression of our palms again and this time, it will be for keeps. Who knows, the artwork might compete with Mona-Lisa in the next century (just joking though). Bye.
