My Wife and I were in my hotel room painting scenarios about an interesting situation and this very important life’s lesson came up.
The full story is that I was to travel to Paris on an 11pm flight on the previous day. Everyone at home knew about my trip, even our friends and families. We didn’t want lots of outsiders to know about my movement, so the gentleman (taxi guy) who takes us around was not asked to drop me off at the airport. My wife took me to a taxi park so I could get a cab; fortunately, or unfortunately, I saw our regular taxi guy and I had to ask him to drop me off at the international airport.
To cut the long story, the taxi guy dropped off at about 8:30pm and we said good byes. Unknown to everyone I know, my flight was cancelled at about 2am. The full story is that we boarded and the plane taxied to the runway before an engine fault was discovered. The airline tried to fix the fault while we waited and after about one hour, we taxied again. The fault re-occurred and the airline cancelled the flight. In the wee hours of the morning, I was checked into a Lagos hotel.
At noon, the next day, while I was still covertly lodging at the hotel, I called my wife to inform her I was still in town. My wife decided she was coming to see me and she asked the same cab guy to drop her at my hotel, close to the airport. She came in at 2pm and asked the gentleman to kindly wait in the car park for 4 hours and take her back home.
As we sat in my hotel room, I asked my wife what she thought our cab guy will be thinking about while waiting for her; “a married woman, whose husband travelled just yesterday is hanging out in a high-class hotel with some guys; whoa!! Woman cannot be trusted”. That was I, going through the permutations of the cab guy’s thoughts. Even as I made jokes about the matter with my wife, we worked the matter further to see the damage his thoughts and possible actions can do to my wife’s reputation.
Can you think of the first thing this guy will do as soon as he drops you at home, I asked my wife; he will call Magdalene, I said. Magdalene is the young lady who introduced us to this cab guy. I continued; he will say, “Maggie, can you imagine what just happened. Your madam is sleeping with another guy; you won’t believe where I took her to. Someone can’t trust all these church people again oo”. The guy will also mention it at his taxi park and before you know it, the news will filter into our estate.
What do you think Maggie will do with that news? Due to the magnitude of the surprise, she will have to share it too. Before anyone can say jack, an innocent person will have zero reputation before a lot of people who thought she was caught red handed in an act that only existed in the imagination of men.
I believe that humans should not put themselves in very suggestive situations if they want clean reputations. The challenge for the cab guy is that he had no idea that I did not travel the previous day or that I was lodging in that hotel.
Personally, I won’t blame any of these people even though I won’t propagate that kind of news based on my understanding of life. Bad news sell and spread faster. The average human heart loves to hear something fishy about others. That’s who we are. Each one of us must determine to break this flow of evil and conscious effort must be made in this regard.
For my wife’s sake, I made sure to show my face to the cab guy before they left. Jokingly, I told my wife, this guy might even have made the calls already. People like to serve bad news when they are hot. Just to be clear, I might have been wrong about the cab guy; he might just be one of those people who care less what others do with their lives. The challenge is that those kinds of humans are few and far between.
